Fellowships (ANNZGOSA)

Austin Hospital / Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, Australia

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital provided him with a strong foundation in Upper GI training, gaining exposure to biliopancreatic and oesophagogastric pathologies. Here, he performed laparoscopic bile duct explorations, open pancreatectomy, open and hybrid gastrectomy, and oesophagectomy.

Austin Hospital is a leading upper GI centre and one of the largest public bariatric units in the country. Here, he trained in the medical and surgical management of bariatric patients, performing sleeve gastrectomy, Roux-en-Y bypass and revisional surgeries. He also consolidated his experience in oesophagogastric and Hiatal operations including those related to oesophageal dysmotility.

DrManju

Senior Fellowship

Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, UK

Queen Elizabeth Hospital is one of the highest volume Oesophagogastric resection units in the UK. Here, he was involved in nearly 150 resections including reoperations, performing over 70% of these cases. These included open, hybrid and minimally invasive oesophageal and gastric resections, and harvesting the jejunal interposition flap for laryngopharyngectomy.

He operated on oesophageal emergencies including oesophageal rupture and perforation, gastric volvulus, and post-operative complications. He performed palliative bypass operations, hiatal operations, and therapeutic gastroscopies including stent and PEG insertions, dilatations and endoscopic treatment of anastomotic leaks.

Research

Dr Manju’s research interest lies in various facets of Upper GI surgery and surgical education. He has investigated the role of gastrectomy in gastric cancer, various aspects relating to oesophageal cancer and its outcomes, fundoplication in GORD and following Heller Myotomy and the use of mesh in hiatus hernia. He has explored various surgical training methodologies available to trainees with regard to operative skills and their efficacies, research opportunities for medical students, training elements in minimally invasive surgery and psychosocial consequences of complications on the surgeons.

During the process, he has led research projects in the UK and Australia resulting in numerous publications, book chapters and two masters. He has and continues to supervise medical students, surgical trainees and Master’s students in various aspects of research and thesis.
